KATSEYE Hits No. 1, NCT 127 Returns and More

This week in K-pop is moving in several directions at once.

KATSEYE has scored the biggest chart achievement of its career in the U.S., NCT 127 is back with a new album during its 10th anniversary year, and two familiar names from K-pop’s second generation — TAEMIN and Girls’ Generation — have new releases arriving on the same day. Meanwhile, BTS remains on the Billboard 200, while JENNIE and LISA keep BLACKPINK’s solo calendar moving.

Here are five stories shaping K-pop at the end of August.

KATSEYE Hits No. 1 on the Billboard 200 With Four Hot 100 Songs

KATSEYE has the biggest chart story in K-pop this week.

The group’s third EP, 《WILD》, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for the first time.

And the success goes beyond the album chart.

“Animal” reached No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100, while title track “Hootie Frutti” debuted at No. 31. “Pinky Up” entered at No. 81, and “Iconic By Mistake,” featuring LE SSERAFIM and ILLIT, landed at No. 94.

That put four KATSEYE songs on the Hot 100 at the same time.

Created through a partnership between HYBE and Geffen Records, KATSEYE is a U.S.-based global girl group that incorporates several elements associated with the K-pop system, from training to fandom building.

That is why KATSEYE’s Billboard success keeps bringing up a larger question around the group: where does the definition of K-pop end?

Whatever the answer, 《WILD》 shows that this hybrid model can produce major results in the U.S. music market.

NCT 127 Returns With 《BLINGY》 in Its 10th Anniversary Year

NCT 127 released its seventh studio album, 《BLINGY》, on August 24.

The comeback arrives at an important point in the group’s career.

NCT 127 is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and the members recently renewed their contracts with SM Entertainment. 《BLINGY》 is their first full-length album since the renewal.

Over the years, tracks such as “Fire Truck,” “Cherry Bomb,” “Regular,” and “Fact Check” helped make hard-hitting hip-hop and experimental production central to NCT 127’s identity.

《BLINGY》 does not abandon that history. Instead, the album looks back toward the sound NCT 127 has built over its first decade.

And the next step already has a date.

NCT 127 will launch its fifth world tour, 《NEO CITY – THE REDLINE》, with three concerts at Seoul’s KSPO Dome from September 18 to 20.

After a contract renewal and ten years together, the question is no longer just how another comeback will perform. It is what the next stage of NCT 127 will look like.

TAEMIN and HyoRiSoo Share an August 31 Release Date

The final day of August will bring two releases with special appeal for fans of second-generation K-pop.

SHINee’s TAEMIN will release his new EP, 《PHASE 1 : Soft Violence》, on August 31 at 6 p.m. KST.

The 11-track album features two title tracks, “FLOAT” and “Gooey.”

TAEMIN has spent years building a distinct identity as a solo artist and performer, so the interest goes beyond simply seeing a veteran idol return. The bigger question is where he takes his music and performance style next.

Girls’ Generation will also introduce a new combination on the same day.

Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Sooyoung will debut as HyoRiSoo with the single album 《Skibidi》, featuring “Skibidi” and “Lowkey in Love.”

On one side, TAEMIN is opening another chapter in a long solo career. On the other, three Girls’ Generation members are trying this lineup for the first time.

For fans who grew up with second-generation K-pop, August 31 will be a particularly busy day.

BTS Keeps 《ARIRANG》 on the Billboard 200

BTS continues to hold a place on the U.S. charts with 《ARIRANG》.

The album recently ranked No. 24 on the Billboard 200, extending its run months after release.

《ARIRANG》 has represented more than another album cycle for BTS. Following the members’ military service, the return of full-group activities and the world tour brought the global fandom back around all seven members.

The 《ARIRANG》 tour also brought BTS back to major stadiums, showing the level of live demand the group still commands after its break from full-group activities.

At this point, however, the more interesting story is no longer what happened during the first week of the comeback.

The album and tour have continued generating activity for months, turning BTS’s return into an extended cycle rather than a single comeback event.

JENNIE and LISA Keep BLACKPINK’s Solo Run Moving

BLACKPINK’s individual activities are moving quickly as well.

JENNIE released her new EP, 《Fallen Angel》, on August 28.

The three-track digital project continues to expand her independent career, while “Dracula,” her collaboration with Tame Impala, remains at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Next up is LISA.

LISA will release the single “SaWaDiKa” on September 3, ahead of her solo EP 《Press Play》 on October 23.

All four members began under the same BLACKPINK name, but their individual careers are increasingly moving in different directions through their music, independent projects, and global activities.

Following BLACKPINK today is no longer only about waiting for the group’s next release.

It also means watching how far each member can take her own name outside the group.
